The combination of British craftsmanship, Italian design and German engineering sounds almost too good to be true. Yet that is exactly what Morgan Motor Company has created with the new Morgan Midsummer Coupé.

Developed in collaboration with legendary Italian design house Pininfarina, the Midsummer Coupé is an ultra-exclusive coachbuilt grand tourer that combines Morgan’s traditional craftsmanship with modern engineering — including a BMW B58 inline-six engine.

And there will be just nine customer cars.

Morgan and Pininfarina Take Midsummer in a New Direction

The Midsummer Coupé is not simply a Midsummer Barchetta with a roof added.

The project actually began with a customer request. After the original open-top Midsummer was unveiled in 2024, one customer approached Morgan with the idea of creating a fixed-roof version. Instead of treating it as a simple conversion, Morgan decided to develop an entirely new interpretation of the concept.

The result is a dramatically different silhouette.

The designers at Morgan and Pininfarina reworked the proportions of the car to create a more purposeful grand touring character. The long bonnet, flowing bodywork and dramatic glazed canopy give the Coupé an almost sculptural appearance, while the roofline flows naturally into the rear bodywork.

The fixed-head architecture also allowed Morgan to improve weather protection and everyday usability. Full weather sealing and integrated climate control mean the Midsummer Coupé is intended to be enjoyed in a much wider range of conditions than its open-top sibling.

Only nine customer commissions will be built, with each car individually developed with its owner. Morgan’s designers will work with every customer on colours, leather, wood finishes and bespoke details, meaning no two examples are expected to be identical.

Under the Hood Sits BMW’s B58

For BMW enthusiasts, however, the most interesting part of the story is hidden beneath the long bonnet.

The Midsummer Coupé uses BMW’s 3.0-litre B58 turbocharged inline-six engine, continuing Morgan’s long-standing relationship with BMW powertrains.

The B58 has become one of BMW’s most respected modern petrol engines, powering everything from the Toyota GR Supra to BMW’s own performance models. Morgan has also been using the engine for several years, with the B58 first arriving in the Plus Six in 2019.

Morgan has not yet published official power figures for the Midsummer Coupé. However, the car is closely related technically to the recently introduced Supersport 400, which uses the latest BMW B58 and produces 400 PS.

That makes the Supersport 400 a useful reference point, although the final output of the Midsummer Coupé should not be considered confirmed until Morgan publishes its official specifications.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission. The drivetrain is complemented by a newly developed aluminium gear selector featuring a teak insert — a small detail that perfectly captures the philosophy behind the entire car.

Classic Craftsmanship Meets Modern Engineering

The Midsummer Coupé may look like something created decades ago, but underneath its traditional appearance is a surprisingly sophisticated structure.

Morgan developed a new structural architecture specifically for the fixed-roof car. The windscreen and large glass roof are bonded directly into the aluminium structure, allowing the glazing to contribute to the overall rigidity of the vehicle.

The A-pillars are machined from billet aluminium, while countersunk riveted construction and modern digital measurement techniques are combined with traditional coachbuilding methods.

The result is impressive: despite gaining a fixed roof, the Midsummer Coupé weighs only 2.5 percent more than a Morgan Supersport fitted with a hardtop.

Perhaps even more remarkable is what happens during the construction process.

The central body panels are formed by hand from flat aluminium sheets using traditional English Wheel techniques. Morgan combines this craftsmanship with digital scanning and laser measurement, creating a fascinating mixture of old-world coachbuilding and modern precision.

Even the wooden structure has an engineering role.

An ash frame forms part of the load-bearing architecture, helping to transfer loads through the structure while also providing natural acoustic benefits. It is an approach that would be almost unimaginable in a conventional modern sports car.

A Cabin Built Around Natural Materials

The interior continues the same philosophy.

Instead of covering the cabin with screens and synthetic materials, Morgan has focused on tactile, natural finishes. Teak, leather and aluminium dominate the cabin, creating an atmosphere that feels closer to a hand-built grand tourer than a conventional modern sports car.

The large glazed roof floods the cabin with natural light and gives the fixed-roof Coupé an unusually open character.

The teak theme extends across the dashboard and other interior elements, while the aluminium gear selector receives its own teak insert. Even the window switches are integrated into the roof structure, while the rear-view mirror and teak-inlaid sun visors are mounted on an aluminium rail spanning the cabin.

The nine customer cars will go even further. Each owner will be able to specify individual combinations of leather, timber, colours and bespoke details.

In other words, these are not simply nine identical cars from a limited production run. They are nine individual interpretations of the same concept.

One of the Rarest BMW-Powered Cars

The Midsummer Coupé is an interesting reminder that the BMW B58 has become much more than just another engine in BMW’s portfolio.

Its combination of performance, refinement and flexibility has made it attractive to manufacturers outside BMW itself. In Morgan’s case, the engine provides a thoroughly modern mechanical foundation beneath a car that deliberately rejects the visual language of the modern automotive industry.

There are no aggressive aerodynamic add-ons or oversized digital displays trying to make the car look futuristic.

Instead, the Midsummer Coupé relies on proportion, materials, craftsmanship and mechanical character.

And with only nine customer cars planned, it will be considerably rarer than most modern supercars.

The prototype itself will not become one of those customer cars. Following its public debut, Morgan plans to place it in the Louwman Collection in The Hague, where it will become part of the renowned collection of historic and significant automobiles.
